  String Quartet No. 8 ( 2002 ) by Gloria Coates is a 15-minute work in three movements:

    It was commissioned for the 50th European Weeks Passau "For a Europe and a World of Freedom, Peace, and Friendship" to commemorate the September 11th tragedy.< / p>

    The first movement, On Wings of Sound< / em>, is music in contemplation before the confrontation. The title of the second, "In Falling Timbers Buried"< / em>, is taken from a poem by Emily Dickinson for which Gloria Coates had once composed the music. Fragments of this composition are used in the movement. The third movement is a Prayer< / em> for peace and humanity.< / p>

    String Quartet No. 8 was first performed on June 20, 2002, in Passau, Germany, by the Henschel Quartet.< / p>
